Combined heat and power plant as an LOD-300 model for plant planning

A technically usable Revit as-built model was created from registered point cloud data. It accurately depicts the existing plant technology and spatial installation situation, providing a reliable basis for further planning and documentation tasks.

Project task

Making existing data usable for further technical planning

Initial Situation

For further plant planning, a spatially reliable representation of the existing combined heat and power plant was required. Existing planning documents could not adequately depict the current geometry and the complex installation situations of the technical components.

project goal

The recorded point cloud data should be converted into a structured as-built model that is immediately usable by planners. A Revit model with a level of detail (LOD) of 300 was required.

Agenda

Four steps to a robust inventory model

Define task

The planning objective, relevant plant areas and required level of detail were agreed upon.

Check data

The recorded point clouds were checked for completeness, location, and modelability.

Modeling inventory

Building geometry and technical components were built in Autodesk Revit 2023 at LOD-300 level.

Model handed over

Following the quality check, the structured model for planning and documentation was provided.

Results

What data is available to the planning team?

Revit existing modelStructured planning basis in Autodesk Revit 2023.
Level of detail (LOD) 300Geometrically defined system components and spatial installation situations.
Verifiable inventorySpatial relationship between building, pipelines and technical equipment.

Planning benefits instead of mere inventory documentation

The model enables the project team to coordinate modifications and new plant components on a common spatial basis. This allows for earlier assessment of collisions and installation situations, and simplifies coordination with participating specialist planners.
