Laser measurement of a complex industrial hall in LOD400
This industrial section was to be completely surveyed using lidar for a planning office and modeled in Revit at LOD400. For this project, we opted for hybrid laser scanning. This means we captured the architecture of the industrial building with the NavVis VLX 2.0 mobile laser scanner and then scanned the details of the pipe connections.

Current inventory data for further processing
Initial situation and task
This industrial section should be completely recorded for a planning office using lidar and modeled in REVIT in LOD400. In this project we chose hybrid laser scanning. This means that we recorded the architecture of the industrial hall with the mobile laser scanner NavVis VLX 2.0 and then scanned the details of the pipe connections again with the terrestrial laser scanner, the Trimble TX8. The registration was carried out via NavVis Ivion and Trimble Realworks, where we then carried out the modeling in Revit.
Our client ultimately received a digital twin of the industrial building, in which everything below DN100 was modeled. Timeframe: November 2022. Client: Technical Planning Office. Project: Laser scanning of an industrial building. A digital twin of the industrial building was required. Several work steps are necessary to create the 3D model. Our workflow is as follows:
- First round: Laser scanning with the mobile laser scanner NavVis VLX 2.0
- Second pass: Laser scanning with the Trimble TX8 terrestrial laser scanner
- The entire digitization and preparation took about 6 hours
- The point clouds are registered using NavVis IVION and Trimble RealWorks
- Export, data transfer of the point cloud as a *.e57 file
- Modeling in REVIT 2022 in LOD400
The desired result is based on the following key figures:
- NavVis VLX run: 1
- Number of laser scans – approx. 40
- including color scans
- Recording time on site including preparation – 6 hours
- Calculation time in point cloud – 3 hours
- Processing time for modeling in Revit – approx. 2 weeks

Agenda
From clarifying the task to a usable data basis
Define task
The planning objective, relevant areas, and required results were agreed upon.
Record inventory
The project-relevant areas and installation situations were spatially recorded.
Data processing
Measurement data was recorded, checked and further processed as needed.
Result submitted
The agreed data formats were provided after quality control.
Results
What information is available to the planning team?
Benefits for planning and coordination
Up-to-date digital inventory data reduces assumptions in planning. Project participants work with the same spatial basis and can process modifications, coordination, and documentation tasks transparently.
